How to Measure for Roller Shades?

How to Measure for Roller Shades

Roller Shades are an elegant solution for your windows. They are affordable, come in a variety of sizes, many different patterns, and transparency, giving you the option to go for the modern or the classic look. They are low-maintenance and extremely easy to use.

Roller shades will complement each room, while not driving the focus off of the rest of your interior.

We compiled a list of detailed instructions on how to measure for roller shades and select the right ones for your windows.

Inside or Outside mount?

The difference between an inside and outside mount is the position of roller shades on the windows, whether they are mounted inside the window casing, not covering the window molding or mounted on the wall, covering the window molding. The choice depends on your personal preference since there is no difference in functionality.

The inside mount gives a smooth and framed look while the outside mount provides more privacy and better control of the light. Inside mount looks a bit sleeker and will bring a more elegant style to the room. However, depending on the window shape and depth, it is not always possible to install them.

Measuring for inside mount roller shades

The first requirement you need to check before opting for inside mount roller shades is whether the window depth fits the roller shade type you want. Write down the information about any obstacles, such as handles, or if the window opens inwards.

Measure the width with a steel ruler, since it is firmer than other measuring devices.

Take 3 width measurements, left to right:

  • on the top,
  • in the middle,
  • on the bottom.

Take 3 height measurements, top to bottom:

  • on the left,
  • in the middle,
  • on the right.

Take the measurements in inches and round them to the nearest eighth (1/8) of an inch. The shortest height is “the recess drop”. The fabric covering the window will be at least an inch shorter than the window width.MEASURING FOR INSIDE MOUNT ROLLER SHADES

Measuring for outside mount roller shades

Take 3 width measurements, left to right:

  • on the top,
  • in the middle,
  • on the bottom.

Add at least 2 inches to each side of the window, to the longest measurement.

Take 3 height measurements, top to bottom:

  • on the left,
  • in the middle,
  • on the right.

Add at least 4 inches to the longest measurement, 2 to the top and 2 to the bottom. Take the measurements in inches and round them to the nearest eighth (1/8) of an inch. Use the top width and the longest height when ordering. The measurements with added inches are your exact measurements, while the fabric will be a bit narrower.

If you are getting roller shades for more than one window, take measurements for all of them, even if they appear the same in size. When making an order, take into account the transparency you want.

For children’s rooms, it is advisable to use blackout ones while for living rooms it may be more elegant to choose opaque, to let more natural light in. Think about what color and pattern will look like when the roller shades are covering the windows and when the light is passing through them.
